News & Interviews for Doctor Who: Season 4
Thankfully, a winning mixture of elation and poignancy ensured that the season achieved a great tonal balance where neither light nor dark was allowed to fully overwhelm the other.
Tate grew on me quickly, and acquitted herself quite nicely. It was fun to see someone go head to head with The Doctor rather than look upon him adoringly.
This is the best of the series so far, I think, though there are better standalones and finales scattered through the rest of the series.
I still think Doctor Who's great, by the way -- unmissable and one of the best things on TV. It's witty, pacy, well acted, with gripping storylines and increasingly impressive special effects.
"Planet Of The Dead" plays like just another day at the office for Tennant's Doctor, a fact that is as good an indication as any that it was the right time to begin his era's endgame.
Audience Reviews for Doctor Who: Season 4
The Doctor is back on track with Tenant more self-assured in the role than ever and offered the great Catherine Tate to contrast him. A season full of highlights and a great climax, bringing old companions back into play. Excluding the specials, this is Tenant's best season. Two words: River Song!
Perhaps not the strongest season overall, but contains some of the best episodes of Doctor Who made in its entire 50 year history (Midnight, Silence in the Library, The Waters of Mars).
