Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Critic Consensus: With a terrific cast and a surfeit of visual razzle dazzle, Crazy Rich Asians takes a satisfying step forward for screen representation while deftly drawing inspiration from the classic -- and still effective -- rom-com formula.

Critic Reviews for Crazy Rich Asians
Feels blithely liberated from the obligation to offer up suffering that has long been part of the implicit bargain made with so many mainstream movies focused on characters of color-that they are treated as marketable in relation to the pain they portray
The result is hugely enjoyable, and hooray for Hollywood for making it happen.
This movie is totally delightful...It's a wonderful mix of old-fashioned screwball comedy, romantic comedy, it's almost a musical at some points.
As the obscenities of wealth accumulate while a large cast of Asian and Eurasian actors render their many silly characters, the source of the laughter becomes troubling.
It simply tells an endearing story in an exceptional way. And in so doing, it shows how great stories cross barriers and wind up enriching the world around us.
Audience Reviews for Crazy Rich Asians
For all the hype and all the talk of it being a landmark film, Crazy Rich Asians is, at its core, a pretty good romantic comedy. Nothing more, nothing less. Not to take anything away from it, the cultural significance of such a successful film with an entirely Asian cast is damned noteworthy. But Iâ(TM)m not here to talk about that, Iâ(TM)m here to talk about the film as a film, and as a film itâ(TM)sâ¦itâ(TM)s good! Not great, but good. Thereâ(TM)s nothing really in the movie that I found laugh-out-loud funny (with the exception of Awkwafina), but there were a lot of chuckles, and it was consistently charming. The two different world story is familiar, but the cultural angle gives it a new spin. My one nitpick is I wasnâ(TM)t as crazy about all the glamorization of the rich lifestyle. Thereâ(TM)s a couple lines about it being his families money, and he would throw it all away for her, but for the most part a lot of it feels like an excuse for beautiful imagery. And sure, the imagery is beautiful, but it felt a little like an empty gimmick to me. Still, the film is a nice feel good movie that I did enjoy. It goes by at a breezy pace, and is just a nice experience. For how many garbage romantic comedies are out there, itâ(TM)s nice to see one that while it may not be great, is at least good..
This is a good movie that really shoots right down the middle for mass appeal. It does touch on some intricate details about growing up and living with an Asian family but really plays out as fancy blockbuster rom-com. Since this film does naturally come from a different angle than most rom-coms, however, with different issues and obstacles, it at least stands out. The B-story involving Astrid seems rushed and incomplete but leaves open the option for a sequel that will explore her more, which I would like to see.
Better than expected. I was glad they left a few things out from the book honestly, though I would have liked a little more Kitty Pong!
